Child Health Clinics

Child Health Clinics

When children register with our Practice, we book them in to see one of our Nurses. During the appointment routine questions will be asked regarding the child’s household and educational establishment. The child’s immunisation history will also be assessed and, if required, immunisations will be offered.

Routine Vaccination Schedule

Children are due their immunisations at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 1 year and just before they turn 3 ½ years old.  When your child is due their immunisations, we will automatically send out an invitation for you to book an appointment at our Practice.

Please click on the following link to view the Routine Childhood Immunisation Schedule to see what your child is due.

Other immunisations are given by separate services such as the School Nursing Team. Please see the following link for further information: LCH 0-19 Health and Wellbeing – School Immunisation (leedscommunityhealthcare.nhs.uk).

For travel vaccinations, please see our Clinics & Services page.

International Patients / Uncertain or Incomplete Immunisation Status

Children who arrive in the UK have usually been vaccinated following a slightly different immunisation schedule. When attending for their first appointment with our Nurse, they will advise which immunisations are outstanding (if any) and will discuss the UK schedule with parents or guardians.

For further information please visit: Vaccination of individuals with uncertain or incomplete immunisation status – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

We can offer a comprehensive travel assessment with provision to offer only NHS vaccines if recommended. These include hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster.

Please complete the below online form, then one of our nursing team members will review and send you a link to book your travel appointment, ideally a minimum of a month prior to your travel date, this will give you time to have a course of vaccines if required.

You will be asked your destinations and dates and duration of travel. It is helpful for you to look at the Fitfortravel website Home – Fit for Travel so you are aware of the advice for your destination and you can ask any questions during the appointment time.

Prior to the appointment, we prepare by gathering your vaccine history. If you have been given vaccinations at a private travel clinic – i.e., not a GP surgery, it would be helpful if you could email or hand in a copy of these prior to your appointment so we can complete your records.

During the appointment we will discuss your travel plans including health risks, vaccines and malaria advice and provide more detailed written information to be sent after the appointment via text.

We will give any recommended vaccines during the appointment unless we are unable to do so, in which case we will arrange an appointment for you to return or contact you when the vaccines are available.

Lastly, there is more information on the fit for travel website on how to stay healthy and safe while travelling, please read this carefully before you go and have a good trip!

Coeliac Disease Annual Review Appointments

Coeliac disease is a common autoimmune condition (approximately 1% of the population are affected).  It is caused by sensitivity to gluten, the bowel is then damaged by continued exposure to gluten. Control of the condition requires a lifelong gluten free diet. Gluten occurs in common foods including wheat, barley and rye, and any foods made from these such as bread, pasta and biscuits. Some people with coeliac disease are also sensitive to oats.

If it is not well controlled, it can mean inadequate absorption of nutrients (such as iron and calcium) by the body. This can lead to anaemia and bone problems.

Coeliac disease can also be associated with wider problems such as autoimmune conditions affecting other body organs, and it is important that patients are monitored regularly for these.

Another potential issue with Coeliac Disease is that the body’s immune system may be affected. It is therefore particularly important that patients are up to date with all of their immunisations, including the annual flu vaccination and an extra vaccination against pneumococcal infections, which is given every five years.

We would like to invite all our patients with Coeliac Disease for an annual review, which includes two appointments.

Appointment one is for information gathering including a blood test, weight and height measurement. You will be booked with one of our Health Care Assistants.

Appointment two is with a Clinician for further information gathering and discussion. This will include review of all the information gathered, including the test results and making sure that all immunisations are up to date.

We will be contacting all patients on our register in due course, but please ask to book these appointments if you have coeliac disease and have not had a review in the last 12 months

For further information please see the Coeliac UK website.

Community Pharmacy Consultation Service (CPCS)

What is this new service about?

From 4th May 2021, when you contact the Practice, you will be asked about your symptoms. If your symptoms indicate that you can best be helped by a pharmacist, you will be offered a same day private consultation with a community pharmacist at Boots (Trinity shopping centre) or Leeds Student Pharmacy (166 Woodhouse Lane), others to join shortly. Community pharmacists have already successfully consulted thousands of patients for minor illnesses following a call to NHS 111. This new way of arranging consultations with the pharmacist by a GP practice has been successfully piloted around the country.

Why are you doing this?

Pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals and experts in medicines. They can offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for all sorts of minor illnesses and a same day consultation can be arranged quickly and at a time to suit you. This in turns frees up GP appointments for those people with more complex symptoms who really need to see a GP.

What happens when I see the community pharmacist?

We will share your personal details with the pharmacist and details of your minor illness and the pharmacist will contact you to arrange your consultation on the same day, or at a time that suits you. You may be seen in person in a private consulting room, if the pharmacist thinks it appropriate, or your consultation may be carried out over the phone or via video. You will be asked about your medical history and symptoms and current medication, in the same way the GP would ask you about them. Usually, the pharmacist will provide you with advice and can sell you with an over the counter product where needed, if you choose. They will also send details of your consultation back to us for our records. If the pharmacist feels you need to be seen by a GP urgently, they will call us to ensure you are seen, or they will advise you to contact the hospital Emergency Department if deemed necessary. You may also be referred back to us to arrange a non-urgent appointment or follow up.

What if I get free prescriptions from my GP?

Your pharmacist will provide you with advice on how to treat your symptoms, which may include a medicine or product. Medicines that can be purchased in a pharmacy to treat minor illnesses, are usually inexpensive and would not normally be prescribed by your GP anyway. You are free to choose if you wish to make a purchase or not.

What happens if I don’t want to see the pharmacist?

We want to ensure that you are offered an appointment with the most appropriate qualified health care professional based on your symptoms. If you have minor illness symptoms that can be treated the same day through a consultation with a qualified community pharmacist, but do not want to accept this referral, you will be offered a routine appointment with your GP at a future date.

What if the patient is my child?

Children aged over one year are eligible to use this service and can be seen by the pharmacist. Children who are able to make their own decision about their health may be seen unaccompanied.

Why is this a good thing for patients?

Community pharmacies are local, open longer hours than the GP practice and can offer you the same consultation outcome at a time that is more convenient for you. If the pharmacist thinks you need to see the GP, they can help arrange an urgent appointment for you.

Patients who have already used the service liked the convenience of having a consultation on the same day, or a day that suited them, at a pharmacy of their choice. 78% of people who had a consultation with a community pharmacist were successfully helped.
