The NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check programme targets the top seven causes of preventable mortality: high blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol, obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption.

It is a health improvement programme offering an opportunity for people aged 40-74 to be able to discuss healthy lifestyles before they get sick and it goes on to help them to take control of their health and take action to avoid, reduce or manage their risk of developing future health problems.

At the health check you will be asked questions about your lifestyle and family medical history.

You will have some routine tests such as height, weight, blood pressure, and certain blood tests which help to give an idea of your risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and type 2 diabetes.

Some risk factors cannot be changed such as age. But you can help to reduce your risk by:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Being physically active
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet
  • Stop smoking
  • Reducing alcohol intake.
