Access to tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) in West Yorkshire

Tirzepatide, commonly known as Mounjaro, is a weekly injection shown to help weight loss and improve related health conditions. From 23 June 2025 a small number of GP practices in West Yorkshire started to contact people who might be medically eligible for this treatment to invite them for a clinical assessment.
This phased rollout follows updated guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)and is part of a national staged programme aimed at improving health outcomes for people living with obesity and related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
- Mounjaro is being introduced in a small number of GP practices as part of wider support for people living with obesity
- It is only available to a limited number of patients in the first year, based on strict NHS criteria
- Eligibility includes a BMI of 40 or more and at least four serious weight-related health conditions
- Patients must also take part in a structured support programme (wraparound care) including healthy eating and physical activity
- There is no need to contact your GP practice – eligible patients will be contacted directly by their practice or the NHS
We understand this can be difficult
If you’re living with obesity or weight-related health issues, we understand that the journey can be emotional, frustrating, and difficult – especially when services feel out of reach. That’s why in West Yorkshire, we are committed to taking a trauma-informed approach.
This means recognising the emotional toll that stigma, exclusion, and inconsistent access can have – and doing our best to provide compassionate support that meets people where they are.
Not everyone will be eligible for medication right now. But this is not a reflection of your effort, your worth, or your need. We are building a system that includes a wide range of support—what we call the Pillars of Support – which are available to everyone, whether or not medication is part of your journey.
